So, you’re pregnant!

First off, congrats! What an exciting, if not anxious, time of life, right? I am right there with ya. I remember every time I saw the pink lines pop up, whether on my own pregnancy tests or of friends and family, my heart would quicken and the sudden greatness of pregnancy would fall on me.

If you’ve just gotten those pink lines – your body is already working hard! Understanding what’s happening can bring some reassurance to a racing mind. Let’s talk about a few key hormones at play and what you can expect in early pregnancy.

hCG: The Pregnancy Hormone

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is the hormone that gives you that positive pregnancy test! Your body starts producing hCG after implantation, and levels rise quickly in the first trimester. It helps maintain pregnancy and signals your body to keep producing other needed hormones. If you’re feeling queasy, thank hCG!

Progesterone: The Protector

Progesterone is another key player in early pregnancy. It helps thicken the uterine lining to support the growing embryo and prevents your body from having a period. Progesterone also relaxes muscles (including the uterus) and plays a role in early pregnancy symptoms like bloating, fatigue, and mood changes.

What to Expect in the First Few Weeks

Every pregnancy is different, but common early symptoms include:

  • Fatigue (your body is literally growing new life!)

  • Breast/chest tenderness

  • Nausea or food aversions

  • Increased urination

  • Mild cramping or implantation spotting

  • Emotional rollercoaster

Some people feel great in early pregnancy, while others feel exhausted or nauseous. All experiences are valid, and your body is doing what it needs to do.

How a Doula Can Support You in Early Pregnancy

Many people think of doulas as just for labor and beyond, but we’re here to support you from the very beginning! Here’s how a doula can help in early pregnancy:

  • Emotional Support: Pregnancy can bring up a lot of emotions, especially in the early weeks. A doula provides reassurance, a listening ear, and validation for whatever you’re feeling.

  • Education & Resources: Unsure about what’s normal? A doula can help answer questions, provide evidence-based information, and guide you to helpful resources. Think of me as doula google!

  • Advocacy & Preparation: Whether you’re navigating early pregnancy choices, planning for birth, or figuring out provider options, a doula can help you feel informed and empowered.

  • Comfort Measures: If you’re struggling with nausea, fatigue, or discomfort, a doula can suggest holistic remedies, relaxation techniques, and ways to support your body through these changes.

Early pregnancy can feel like a whirlwind, but you don’t have to go through it alone. Having a doula means having someone in your corner, offering encouragement, knowledge, and support as you begin this journey. No matter where you are in pregnancy, you deserve to feel informed, cared for, and confident in your body’s incredible ability.
